Lowering Property Tax Bills

Property owners can contest property tax bills by challenging the assessed valuation of their homes. Presenting evidence that the estimated value does not accurately reflect the property’s true worth can lead to a reduction in the tax bill. To pursue an appeal:

  1. Ensure the accuracy of assessment data and property details.
  2. Gather comparable listings or seek assistance from a real estate professional.

Deducting Property Taxes

Saving money saving is possible for homeowners by deducting property taxes, as well as state and local income taxes or sales taxes, up to $10,000 ($5,000 for married couples filing separately). To claim this money-saving deduction, taxpayers must itemize their deductions on Schedule A instead of opting for the standard deduction. Moreover, saving money can also be achieved by deducting mortgage interest on tax returns.

Consequences of Nonpayment

Failure to pay property taxes may result in the taxing authority imposing a tax lien on the property. A tax lien represents a legal claim against the property or financial assets owned by the individual. While it does not constitute asset seizure, it does establish a claim on the assets. Consequently, if the property is sold, the government may be entitled to a portion or all of the proceeds.
